Paoli Peaks rebounds with snowy weather

Paoli Peaks rebounds with snowy weather

The first three weeks of December brought zero snow along with temperatures that averaged 8-9 degrees above normal to southern Indiana. Coming off a mild winter last year, the prospects for upcoming ski season at Paoli Peaks Ski Resort were below peak level.

But three winter events since Christmas night along with abundant cold air has been a windfall for skiiers who travel from Dubois and Pike Counties over to the region's only skiing facility. High temperatures through Friday will be in the upper 20s/lower 30s. Temperates will fall into the 20s at night...perfect for skiing.

Winter weather advisory

Winter weather advisory

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the southern counties of Illinois and southwest Indiana.

These counties could see ice developing in the early hours of the event today with a chance for 1 to 2 inches of accumulated snow, followed by another opportunity for sleet and freezing rain as the system moves out of the area.

There is a chance some of this winter precipitation will spill over into other Western Kentucky Counties, particularly those along the Ohio River and those specifically listed in the advisory.

The Indiana Department of Transportation is focusing attention on what is likely the first statewide winter storm of the season, and is asking motorists to do the same.

INDOT’s salt domes and barns are stocked and ready, but motorists will need to dust off winter driving habits following last year’s mild winter. Motorists are asked to promote their own safety and that of others by reducing their speed according to road conditions and increasing the distance between themselves and other vehicles, especially INDOT’s yellow plow trucks.

Warming up for December

Warming up for December

Brisk southerly winds at 10-20 mph will continue to force the temperature up into the 60's on Saturday and Sunday according to Chief Meteorologist Jeff Lyons.

The southern half of the Tri-State will likely see upper 60's—perhaps close to a record.

Sunday and Monday will be in the mid-to-upper 60s as well during the afternoon with 70 degrees a possibility on Monday.

Rain chances will peak on Tuesday, and temps will begin a quick retreat to the normal range for this time of year.

Temperatures climbed into the 60s again on Wednesday, giving us five consecutive day of temperatures above that mark.  Meteorologist Jeff Lyons says we'll make it six on Thanksgiving as the high climbs into the middle 60s.

A cold front will deliver clouds, rain and cooler temperatures late Thursday night and early Friday morning.  Friday's high will struggle to reach 50.  Saturday looks especially chilly.

Look for rain to move in early next week with temps in the upper 40s.

Freeze warning overnight

Freeze warning overnight

A freeze warning is in effect for virtually all of the Tri-State between 2 a.m. and 8 a.m. CDT Thursday.  Temperatures will dip into the lower to middle 30s overnight in southwest Indiana, western Kentucky and much of southern Illinois.

If you have plants that might be susceptible to freezing, protecting them from the cold or bringing them indoors is advised.

Temperatures are expected to warm slightly by Thursday and into the weekend and freezing shouldn't be a problem then.
