Dubois Strong contributes $10,000 to I-67 effort

Dubois Strong has committed $10,000 to the Interstate 67 Development Corporation in support of the ongoing effort to establish an Interstate highway corridor through South-Central Indiana.

The decision to support the initiative comes after the publication of a Feasibility Study in 2012 and a recent trip by local officials and business leaders to Washington, D.C., aimed at raising awareness within Congress of the need for an improved highway corridor.

The proposed I-67 would upgrade part of U.S. 231 to interstate quality and a new, 38-mile section of road would be constructed east of the current highway to connect to I-69 in Washington. The road would run on to Owensboro before continuing on to I-65 at Bowling Green.  Ultimately, the corridor could extend from Nashville, TN, to Grand Rapids, MI.

Workers for the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) are focusing their efforts on patching potholes and removing litter from along highways throughout the area.  The Annual Trash Bash takes place from April 6-28, 2013 and coincides with National Earth Day to aid in raising awareness of litter.

INDOT crews along with crews from the Indiana Department of Correction (DOC) and Adopt-A-Highway remove hundreds of tons of rubbish and debris from the roadway edges in time for spring each year.  In 2012, 15,812 bags of trash were collected from state highways and right-of-way areas.

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) is advising motorists there will be temporary lane restrictions on Interstate 64  in Dubois, Perry and Crawford counties next week.

Beginning Monday, April 1, INDOT crews will be clearing debris from bridge decks on I-64 from State Road 162 (Exit 63) to State Road 66 (Exit 92).  Work will continue through Friday, April 5.

Watch for pot holes as temperatures rise

Watch for pot holes as temperatures rise

Temperatures are forecasted to rise above freezing for Southwest Indiana later this week, increasing the likelihood that potholes will form. When the Indiana Department of Transportation is not clearing snow, ice or storm debris, crews are focused on maintaining and preserving the state’s roads and bridges.

Potholes begin when water seeps into the cracks in a road and freezes, expanding the layers of pavement, stone and soil beneath the surface. As the ice melts and contracts, heavy highway traffic further loosens the pavement, forming potholes.

The Indiana Department of Transportation is focusing attention on what is likely the first statewide winter storm of the season, and is asking motorists to do the same.

INDOT’s salt domes and barns are stocked and ready, but motorists will need to dust off winter driving habits following last year’s mild winter. Motorists are asked to promote their own safety and that of others by reducing their speed according to road conditions and increasing the distance between themselves and other vehicles, especially INDOT’s yellow plow trucks.

Deer a common crash hazard on new I-69

Deer a common crash hazard on new I-69

Those traveling the new section of I-69 are finding deer to be a common hazard.

A state conservation officer told our media partner, the Princeton Daily Clarion, that the area’s large deer population means mating deer often chase each other onto the roadway.

A 67-mile stretch of the new interstate opened last month and it runs through part of Gibson and Pike Counties.

A state police captain says deer were involved in 28 of the 28 crashes that had occurred on the interstate through last week.
