Martinsville bass fisherman wins at Patoka

 

Gary Wagner of Martinsville, Ind., weighed in four bass totaling 15 pounds, 5 ounces Saturday to win the Walmart Bass Fishing League Hoosier Division event on  Patoka Lake. For his victory, Wagner earned $4,575.   

“On my first day of practice I never got a single bite,” said Wagner. “It was very discouraging to me, but I knew the fish had to be somewhere. I went out on the second day and changed my game plan up quite a bit. It wasn’t until later that day when I finally found a pattern that worked.

Registration is open for individuals 15 and older for the Patoka Lake Triathlon at Patoka Lake beach on Saturday, Aug. 24, starting at 8:30 a.m.

Swim 500 yards in the lake. Bike 12.8 miles along paved roads within the property. Run 5K along groomed gravel roads and a paved bike trail.

Register within the next 30 days for a chance to win a free one-night cabin rental near the Patoka Lake entrance for the night before the race. Visit patokatriathlon.dnr.IN.gov for more information.

All proceeds will support Patoka’s non-releasable raptors—a red-tailed hawk and Eastern screech owl—and also may help save the life of a bald eagle by helping Patoka acquire a non-releasable eagle for its raptor education program.

BFL event coming to Patoka Lake March 23

The 2013 Walmart Bass Fishing League season continues with three tournaments around the country on Saturday, March 23 including a Hoosier Division event on Patoka Lake.    Up to 400 boaters and co-anglers will be competing in each event for top awards up to $8,000 and $3,000 respectively.

Spanning just shy of 9,000 surface acres,Patoka Lake has a reputation for containing lots of timber, both submerged and emergent. Water level is currently close to full pool, allowing the flooded lumber to provide plenty of cover and habitat for the dominant species of the lake, the largemouth bass.

The 8th annual Downtown Jasper fun run / walk has been renamed and expanded. It is now a three phase event, taking place May 4.

Jeeps win sectional; set to face Barr-Reeve

The Northeast Dubois Jeeps are sectional champs.  The Jeeps beat Tecumseh 69-60 in overtime Saturday night to win the Class A title and are moving on to this weekend's regional tournament at Loogootee.

Northeast Dubois is now 11-12 and will face Barr-Reeve at 10:30 a.m. Eastern time.  The Vikings are 22-1.

The winner of the sectional semi-final takes on either Orleans or Borden for the sectional title on Saturday night.

IHSAA: Southridge, Jasper football enrollments up

IHSAA:  Southridge, Jasper football enrollments up

The Indiana High School Athletic Association has announced enrollment totals that will eventually determine the class in which each member school participates in various sports.

Jasper High School's enrollment is listed at 1,099 for next school year.  That ranks 101st in the state, up from Jasper's 106 ranking this year.

Southridge jumped from 210th on the IHSAA list to 196 with 552 students. 

Pike Central ranks 190th, with 564 students, a number that will put the 3A Chargers on the edge of Class 2A.

Classifications will be set and published within the next two weeks.

Pike-Dubois County deer hunters part of record breaking year

Hunters in Dubois County bagged nearly 2,000 deer in 2012 according to a new report from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.  Pike County hunters took 1,339.

There were 639 antlered deer and 1,350 antlerless killed in Dubois County and 548 antlered/791 antlerless in Pike County.

Statewide, hunters took advantage of new equipment regulations and extra hunting dates to harvest a record 136,248 deer during the 2012 season, according to data the DNR gathered from designated check stations and from a recently implemented online and phone reporting system.

The total harvest represented a 6 percent increase over the 2011 season’s harvest and topped the previous record of 134,004 deer set in 2010.
