Forest Park grad earns prestigious UE music scholarship

 

Kaitlin Emmert of Ferdinand has been named this year's Presser Undergraduate Scholar by the University of Evansville Department of Music.

The scholarship award is given annually to a rising senior music major at UE, selected by the music faculty on the basis of excellence and merit.

Emmert, a graduate of Forest Park High School, is majoring in music therapy with a minor in psychology and a certificate in Suzuki pedagogy. She plays violin in the University Symphony Orchestra and String Ensemble.

A Saturday night ATV accident in Martin County injured 53-year-old Nicholas Leidgen of Jasper.

DNR law enforcement officials say Leidgen was operating a 2012 Polaris ATV west bound on Rusk Road in southern Martin County, at approximately 9:00 p.m., when for unknown reasons the ATV left the roadway and overturned, throwing Leidgen from the machine.

The Huntingburg Chamber of Commerce would like to welcome everyone to participate in our community yard sale on Friday, May 10th and Saturday, May 11th, 2013.

We ask people who would like to participate to pick up a registration form from the Huntingburg Chamber of Commerce Office in the ONB building at 327 E. 4th Street, Suite 205 Huntingburg.

The registration form was also included in April’s utility bills. Registration deadline is May 3rd. The Chamber will be charging $10 for participation.

The Town of Ferdinand’s yard waste collection area on East 23rd Street has seen some abuse of policy in recent weeks.  Continued abuse of the center could, potentially, force Town officials to close the facility to public use.

“Over the past couple of weeks, we’ve seen residential trash, shrubs with root balls still attached, and, most recently, treated lumber scraps were left there—all of which must be hand-sorted and removed,” said Ferdinand Town Manager Marc Steczyk.  “We are at one of our peak times of the year and, with limited staffing, we simply cannot afford to pull employees off of necessary tasks to do completely unnecessary work.

A 57-year-old Petersburg man was flown to St. Mary’s Medical Center Monday after an accident on SR 56 west of Ireland.

At approximately 7:42 p.m. Saturday the Indiana State Police responded to a one vehicle crash on Meridian Road just South of County Road 100S where five people were injured, one seriously, and the driver was arrested for operating a vehicle while under the influence of marijuana.

Indiana State Police say Hector Vazquez Jr, 18, Huntingburg was driving a red 1996 Honda Civic southbound on Meridian Road at a high rate of speed. As he attempted to negotiate a curve he lost control and left the roadway striking a tree. Due to the high rate of speed the vehicle continued and hit another tree and then traveled back onto the roadway.

Large fire breaks out in woods near Gibson/Pike Co. line

GIBSON/PIKE COUNTIES, IN (WFIE)- The smoke could be seen for miles on Sunday night from a fire located in a swamp near Oakland City.

The fire happened between Oakland City and Spurgeon Sunday afternoon and ate up a large area between State Road 64 and Haul Road.

Fire officials say no one was injured and they aren't sure yet how it all started.

At about 2:00 P.M. CST Sunday afternoon, fire crews from Spurgeon, Columbia, and Lockhart Townships came out to try to contain a fire that spread across 60-acres.
