ATV accident injures one; investigation underway | News
Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating an all terrain vehicle accident with injuries that occurred last Thursday evening shortly before 10 p.m. in northwest Pike County.
Officers say they were told Ryan J. Beadles, 27, was riding a four-wheeler on Pike County Road 825 West with Shawn D. Staggs, 34, as passenger. Both men are from Hazelton. A girlfriend of Beadles was accompanying them on a separate ATV.
As Beadles approached a turn in the road, he was unable to negotiate the curve causing the ATV to flip. Anticipating the accident, Beadles jumped from the ATV, but was uninjured. Staggs received injuries to his back and neck. Evidence at the scene suggests the ATV landed on Staggs.
Pike County EMS, Pike County Sheriff’s Department, Union Fire Department, Petersburg Fire Department, and Indiana Conservation Officers responded to the scene. Staggs was transported by AirEvac to Deaconess Hospital in Evansville.
The accident is still under investigation. Excessive speed and alcohol consumption may be contributing factors in the accident. Upon completion of the investigation, the case will be turned over to the Pike County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
