Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center is offering a new program “Diet-Free: Eight Habits That Will Change Your Life.” This nine-week video seminar, led by a registered dietitian, is a weight-loss program that coaches you through eight diet-free habits that will guide you toward a healthier life.

Trouble sleeping?  Memorial Hospital holding sleep disorder program

Sleep-related difficulties, typically called sleep disorders, affect many people. Major sleep disorders include: insomnia (the inability to fall or stay asleep), hypersomnia (excessive daytime sleepiness), Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS), and sleep apnea (interrupted sleep caused by periodic gasping or snorting noises or momentarily suspension of breathing). During the HealthMatters program on Tuesday, March 19, pulmonologist Dr. Sohail Qadir will discuss various sleep disorders and ways to get tested and receive treatment.

HealthMatters is a series of free public programs presented by local physicians and sponsored by Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center. The program will begin at 7:00 p.m. in the Medical Arts Building Conference Center, located at 721 W. 13th Street in Jasper. Pre-registration is not required.

Certified Nursing Assistant classes set for March in Jasper

Vincennes University Jasper Campus will offer Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) training programs this spring semester. The 105-hour program includes 30 classroom hours and 75 clinical hours.  Next class is March 11 to 15, 8:00AM to 4:30PM. Clinicals begin March 18.   

For admission a GED or high school diploma is recommended but not required.

Dealing with grief is subject of new hospital program

The death of a loved one, a child leaving home, or overwhelming changes in one’s personal life – each can cause profound grief and suffering. To offer reassurance and comfort, Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center has developed a free support program called “Grief Recovery.”

In this program, participants will learn that grief is normal, examine the various emotions of grief, be encouraged to face the pain, and find ways to make a healthy emotional withdrawal from the loss.

Dr. David Bell joins Memorial Hospital staff

Family Physician David Bell, M.D. was recently appointed to the Active Medical Staff at Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center. Dr. Bell received his medical degree from University of Louisville Medical School and completed a residency in family practice at University of Massachusetts.

He previously served as president of Narragansett Family Medicine in Templeton, Massachusetts and as hospitalist with Deaconess Care Group in Evansville.

Women's health event in Dubois Co. Saturday

A special morning devoted to women’s health is planned for Saturday, January 12 from 9:00 until 11:30 a.m. at the Huntingburg Event Center. Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center’s “Women of the Heartland” will feature presentations by Dr. Adam Dawkins, Dr. Kris Gunn, and Dr. Kristi Nord.

Dr. Dawkins, cardiologist, will present “What Every Woman Can Do to Prevent Heart Disease.” He received his medical degree at Indiana University School of Medicine, and completed a residency in internal medicine at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis where he also completed a fellowship in cardiology.

Alzheimer's caregiver support group meetings in Jasper

Memorial Counseling Center sponsors an Alzheimer's Disease and Dementia Caregiver Support Group on the first Wednesday of each month. The next meeting is on Wednesday, January 2 from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. in the Medical Arts Conference Center, which is located on the first level of the Medical Arts Building at 721 West 13th Street in Jasper. This support group allows caregivers to come together to share knowledge and experiences in caring for loved ones who are affected by these illnesses.
