Two Dubois County farms earn Hoosier Homestead awards | Families

Indiana Lt. Governor Becky Skillman and Indiana Agriculture Director Joe Kelsay have honored 72 families with the Hoosier Homestead Award. The ceremony took place in the Indiana Farm Bureau Building Auditorium at the Indiana State Fair Wednesday.  Among the winners were two Dubois County farms; Shue/Kitten (1852) and Welp Homestead Farm, Inc. (1876).

To be named a Hoosier Homestead, farms must be owned by the same family for more than 100 consecutive years and consist of 20 acres or more or produce at least $1,000 worth of agricultural products per year. The award was created to recognize the contribution these family farms have made to the economic, cultural and social advancements of Indiana.

Of the 72 Hoosier Homestead recipients, 57 will receive the Centennial Award for keeping their farm in their family for more than 100 years and 15 will receive the Sesquicentennial Award for more than 150 years.

“It is always my honor to present these awards and meet these hard-working farm families,” said Lt. Governor, Becky Skillman. “These families are the reason Indiana has high-quality affordable food for every Hoosier, every day.”
