Upcoming blood donation opportunities in Perry County

During March, Red Cross Month, the American Red Cross recognizes these lifesavers, thanks them for their generosity and encourages others to join their ranks. March was first proclaimed Red Cross Month in 1943 by former President Franklin Roosevelt. Since then, every president, including President Barack Obama, has designated March as Red Cross Month.

On behalf of Dubois County, Commissioner Doug Uebelhor recently accepted a check for $921,564.47.  Unfortunately for the county’s bottom line, a smaller version won’t be cashed.  The check is symbolic, only.

Ferdinand welcome signage contest winner announced

Amy Troesch, an eighth grade student at Forest Park Jr./Sr. High School, has designed the winning sign in the Town of Ferdinand’s contest to create welcome signage at the Town’s north and south entry points.  Kelly Weyer, a senior at Forest Park, came in a close second place.   Troesch is the daughter of Jim and Jennifer Troesch and Weyer is the daughter of John and Jean Weyer.  Elements of both designs will be used to create the final versions of the welcome signs.

Troesch will receive a gift certificate from All Star Sports for her efforts, and Weyer will receive a McDonald’s gift certificate.

USI’s Historic Southern Indiana will recognize a southern Indiana community for its outstanding achievements in preservation, enhancement, and promotion of its distinctive heritage with the 13th annual Community Legacy Award. With the award, Historic Southern Indiana seeks to strengthen the quality of life for residents of and visitors to southern Indiana by paying tribute to excellence in standards of community development.

The Community Legacy Award is open to communities in all southwest Indiana counties. There is no limit on the size of the community who wish to apply for the award.

Store plans fundraisers to help Jasper Police pay for new dog

Petsense in Jasper will be holding Fundraiser Events to benefit the Jasper Police Depart K-9 Unit.  Several events are planned over the next two months as the business aims to help replace Max, the department’s last dog, who was retired recently.

Petsense will be donating 5% of its sales, up to $1000, the week of January 21-27, to the Police Department.

On January 26, they will be having a Children’s Craft and Awareness Day at the store from 11-1.

Family Video stores, including the Petersburg location, are collecting movies for troops overseas. 

"Movies for the Troops 2012", is designed to entertain the members of our armed forces stationed around the world.  Last year, they were able to donate over half a million movies donated by families.  This year’s goal is two million.

Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center’s Family Palliative Care is offering everyone an opportunity to “Light Up a Life" and decorate a community Christmas tree with special ornaments in memory/honor/celebration of loved ones. The Christmas tree is on display at Hometown IGA at The Crossing in Jasper until New Year’s Day.

For a $5 donation, a dove ornament will be inscribed "in honor," "in memory," or "in celebration" of a friend, relative, or loved one – anyone whom the donor wishes to have honored or remembered. Donation forms are available at the customer service desk at Hometown IGA at The Crossing and at the information desk at Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center.
