Access Storage adds two facilities in Dubois Co.

Access Storage Now, a locally-owned and managed self storage company based in Ferdinand, has announced the acquisition of two additional storage facilities.  The former Northside Storage in Huntingburg, located at 516 E. SR 64, and Dauby Self Storage & Boat Storage in Dale, located at 3320 E CR 2000 N, were purchased earlier this month and are currently being operated as Access Storage in Huntingburg and Access Storage in Dale (pictured), respectively.

The Jasper Chamber of Commerce will hold a free paper shredding day on Friday, April 20 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Jasper Train Deport on South Jackson St.

Clean out your office at home or at work by gathering your old files, cancelled checks, receipts and tax forms and bringing them in to be shredded.  Doing so can help you avoid becoming a victim of identity theft.  There's a 100 pound limit.

Staples, paper clips and file folders can all be shredded.

The event will take place rain or shine.

The HTC Entrepreneurship Committee is asking for the community to please complete a brief survey. 

Last year, the City of Jasper was selected as one of five participants in the 2011 Indiana Hometown Competitiveness Program (IHTC). The IHTC is a process designed to help communities develop their strengths to improve the quality of life for all of its citizens.

HTC is about recognizing thecommunity’s strengths and most importantly addressing the areas in need of improvement.

Indiana’s unemployment rate dropped 0.3 percent to 8.4 percent in February. The nation’s unemployment rate held steady at 8.3 percent. In addition, new claims for unemployment insurance have dropped to just below 5,000, for the second week in a row, the first time this has happened in seven years.

Dubois County, which had maintained the state's lowest unemployment rate for several months, saw its rate rise from 6% to 6.6% however.  The county's unemployment number is still among the state's five lowest.

Pike County dropped from 7.8% to 7.7%.

Dubois Co. Leadership Academy selects 2012 class

The Dubois County Leadership Academy has selected the members of its 2012 class and is set to begin on Wednesday, April 11, at the Vincennes University – Jasper Campus’ lecture hall.

The Leadership Academy is a collaborative effort between government leaders in Ferdinand, Huntingburg, and Jasper, as well as with Ferdinand and Jasper’s HomeTown Competitiveness initiatives, VUJC, and the Huntingburg Community Foundation.  Class members will meet a total of six times (four hour sessions) with leadership essentials, problem solving, government and public service, communications, and religious and civic leadership being the primary class topics.

Area economic development will receive a boost thanks to the backing of Vincennes University, Purdue University, and the Dubois County Area Development Corporation (DCADC).

The partners will jointly fund the cost to support a wide range of technology training for southwestern Indiana employers for the next three years.  With offices at the Jasper Advanced Manufacturing and Technology Center, now under construction at the VU Jasper Campus, the training will bring together the resources of VU, Purdue, and DCADC.

The new VUJC Center will add more than 54,000 square feet of laboratory and classroom space for instruction in the latest technologies needed for workers to succeed in the modern workforce.  As part of the partnership, applicants will soon be sought to lead the local technology training office.

Growing Jasper furniture maker gets boost from USDA/USI program

Four Indiana companies including LUI Plus in Jasper, have been selected to participate in a second BreakOut Program offered through USI’s Division of Outreach and Engagement and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). Funded through a grant from the USDA Rural Development Office, the program will provide high-level resources to help the companies build on their successes and ‘break out’ to the next level.

The program offers access to a professional business resource team who specialize in marketing and sales, accounting, business management, and professional coaching. Participants will receive 30 to 50 contact hours with the team over a two to three month timeframe with written documentation from each work session.
