The Dubois County bombers have new owners.

Our media partner, WITZ, reports that a group of local business-owners and residents has purchased the baseball operation. 

 Dubois County Baseball, LLC. will take over leadership of the Bombers as of December 1.

 “League Stadium has such a rich history and is the perfect setting to enjoy America’s favorite pastime in a family-friendly atmosphere, “ said Mike Uebelhor, Bombers managing partner.

Wes Fink will be the new coach and Skip Kruger takes over as general manager.

Unemployment continues to drop across Indiana but the latest figures from the Indiana Department of Workforce Development show Warrick County's jobless rate holding at 5.9%.

That October figure matches September but is still down from 6.6% in August.

Dubois County continues to have the state's lowest jobless figure at 4.8%.

Overall, Indiana nearly doubled the national rate of job growth in October, adding 7,700 private sector jobs. This marks the largest monthly gain since May. Private sector employment in the Hoosier state is now at more than 96 percent of the 2007 pre-recession levels.

Meyer Distributing, Inc., an automotive specialty products marketing and distribution provider, recently announced plans to expand its headquarters in Jasper, IN - creating up to 109 new jobs by the end of 2016.

A Ground-breaking Event is being coordinated by the Jasper Chamber of Commerce and the City of Jasper on Friday, November 16th  at 8:30 a.m. (Eastern Time) – on the west side of Cathy Lane – in the old GT Industries parking lot where the current construction is taking place.  Jasper Mayor Terry Seitz and Meyer Distributing Company President & Owner Mike Braun will facilitate the event, followed by a “shovel ceremony” involving company representatives.

Holland residents, USPS officials discuss post office's future

If U.S. Postal officials get approval, the post office in Holland will be open from 8:30 to 3 p.m. weekdays and Saturdays from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m. beginning sometime next year.

Cindy Klaiber, Manager of Post Office Operations for a large portion of southwestern Indiana, said more than 200 residents returned surveys after the post office asked for input.  The postal service is looking to cut expenses in the face of huge deficits.  

Third Community Conversation on “Importance of Place” to be held in Huntingburg

Dubois County residents are invited to attend the third and final 2012 Community Conversation on the importance of place on Nov. 14 in Huntingburg. The three-part series, called “The importance of place: Who we are, what we are and where we’re going,” has already included a session in Jasper and in Ferdinand. Attendance at the first and second conversations is not required for the third event.

The event will be held at the Huntingburg Event Center and include dinner. The cost is $25. Speakers representing the Home Town Competitiveness teams from Ferdinand and Jasper will present findings from their community research and report on initiatives already conducted. Attendees will also participate in breakout sessions to discuss ways to maximize Dubois County’s strengths and position it for the future.

The Grow Southwest Indiana Workforce Board will recognize two area businesses and five clients at its annual meeting for their accomplishments through the help of WorkOne Southwest services.  

Client nominees are in Adult, Dislocated Worker, and Youth categories and demonstrated the following criteria: a client who accessed all eligible WorkOne programs and services; a client who demonstrated the willingness to persist and overcome particular difficulties; a client who entered employment in an in-demand occupation, or for the Youth nominees, a client who completed education or employment goals. The Adult awards will be presented to a resident of Knox County and a resident of Gibson County. The Dislocated Worker award will go to a Knox County resident, and Youth awards will be presented to a Pike County resident and a Posey County resident.

Dubois County continues to have the lowest unemployment rate among all 92 Indiana counties but in September, there was new cause to celebrate:  a rate of under 5%.

All of southwest Indiana ranks below the state average.  Pike County's rate is 7.3%.

Overall, Indiana’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate dropped to 8.2 percent in September, down from 8.3 percent in August. This marks the first decline in the rate since April. Indiana also recorded its first increase in the labor force in seven months, signaling more Hoosiers may be encouraged by strong job growth throughout the year and are again looking for work.
