Indiana Furniture plans expansion

Indiana Furniture Industries, Inc., a manufacturer and distributor of office furniture, says it will expand its operations in Jasper, creating up to 10 new high-wage jobs by 2015. The company will add a 30,000 square-foot addition to one of its existing manufacturing facilities as part of the project. The new addition is slated to be operational by the end of 2012.

Indiana Furniture, which currently has 287 full-time employees in Indiana, plans to begin hiring additional technical machine operators and engineers to coincide with facility construction. Interested candidates should apply at www.indianafurniture.com.

"To gain a competitive advantage in this industry, we've recognized that we need to embrace innovation in technology and processes. Therefore we plan on considerable capital expenditures over the next several years."

Beef producers meeting set for January

Purdue University and the Indiana Beef Cattle Association will hold 10 area beef meetings across Indiana in December and January.

The meetings, open to all beef producers, will feature a presentation titled "How do you know if you are feeding the right mineral?" by Ron Lemenager, Purdue Extension beef specialist. Each meeting also will include information on beef issues and policies and programs, and will feature local food.

One of those meetings will take place Dubois County Fairgrounds on January 11 at 6:30 p.m. Register with Purdue Extension Dubois County at 812-482-1782 by Jan. 3. The meeting is for beef producers in  Daviess, Dubois, Gibson, Knox, Martin, Perry, Pike, Posey, Spencer, Vanderburgh and Warrick Counties.

Dubois County maintains state's lowest unemployment rate

Dubois County continues to have the lowest unemployment rate in the state of Indiana, according to numbers released by the Department of Workforce Development on Tuesday.  The Dubois County rate of six percent is less than half that of Fayette County, which continues to have the most unemployed workers at 12.3%.  Pike County's rate is 7.3%, well under the state average.

Three southwestern Indiana counties have unemployment rates of less than 7% including Daviess (6.1), Warrick (6.6) and Posey (6.9). 

More Hoosiers are rejoining the labor force, and the preliminary seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate moved slightly from 8.9 percent to 9.0 percent in October. The U.S. rate declined from 9.1 percent to 9.0 percent this month. Indiana’s unemployment rate is equal to or lower than all of our neighboring states for the ninth month in a row. Private sector employment decreased by 2,900 jobs.

Indiana’s labor force has increased by 36,000 in the last three months, the largest three-month increase since late 1993.

Thirteen sites across Indiana, including  earned the title of 'shovel ready' today, paving the way for businesses to quickly locate new operations on property ready for development.

The thirteen new sites located in Dubois, Fulton, Gibson, Greene, Johnson, Monroe, Shelby, Steuben, Vanderburgh, Wabash, Wayne, White and Whitley counties join the list of 80 other 'shovel ready' sites identified by the state since 2006 that have undergone extensive title work, proof of ownership, legal and environmental review and qualify for expedited permitting with state regulatory agencies.

The Huntingburg Airport Technology Park (196 acres) is on the list of those receiving certification.

A Jasper couple really has an entrepreneurial spirit.

Monica and Jeff Tunks own Batteries Now, Norms Market, the Jasper City Bakery and they're working on a new motorsports dealership.  

Now, they're bringing self-serve frozen yogurt to Dubois County.  Yo-Peak has opened inside the bakery on North Truman Road. 

Visitors grab a paper container, select from a variety of flavored yogurt and add their own toppings.  The charge is based on the weight of what's inside your own home made sundae.

The Ferdinand Chamber of Commerce has named Ed Talucci and Chris Welp as its two newest board members.  They join Frank Gessner, Alan Hoffman, Diane Hoppenjans, Jim Mehling, current president Pat Miller, Sr. Barbara Lynn Schmitz, executive director Marc Steczyk, Luke Tieken, Brian Tretter, and Olivia Uebelhor on the board of directors.

“Ed and Chris bring two distinct view points, skills, and opinions to our board and we are very happy to have them join us in our efforts to promote the community and, particularly, the business climate in Ferdinand,” said chamber president Pat Miller.

1440 Cafe officially opens Saturday

The former Boundless Grounds in Ferdinand is now the 1440 Café and is under the ownership of Keith Fritz.  They will hold their ribbon cutting event on Saturday, November 12  at 10 a.m.  Along with the ribbon cutting, visitors can sample some of the food that gourmet chef Connie Fritz is now preparing in the café.  

Every day you can expect delicious freshly prepared soups and salads to go with deli sandwiches.
