If U.S. Postal officials get approval, the post office in Holland will be open from 8:30 to 3 p.m. weekdays and Saturdays from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m. beginning sometime next year.

Cindy Klaiber, Manager of Post Office Operations for a large portion of southwestern Indiana, said more than 200 residents returned surveys after the post office asked for input.  The postal service is looking to cut expenses in the face of huge deficits.

At a meeting Tuesday night at St. James Lutheran Church, some residents expressed a desire to have the post office be open later at least one afternoon per week to allow those who work outside the community to get the post office before it closes.  Klaiber said that she would take the request under consideration.

The final decision will be posted at the Post Office on Tuesday. The new hours will be based on the surveys and the input from the public, according to a report by WITZ Radio.

The postal service is hoping that reduced hours can help save some of the nation’s smaller post offices.
