Big drop in Dubois County unemployment claims

Unemployment in Dubois County dropped by more than one percentage point from March to April according to figures released by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.  The county's 5.2% rate is the lowest in the state, just ahead of Hamilton (5.3%) and Daviess (5.5%).  In Pike County, 6.9% of eligible workers were without a job.

 

Overall, Indiana’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate declined by 0.2 percent to 8.5 percent in April, the largest one month decrease in over a year. Private sector employment in the Hoosier state also increased by 6,800 jobs over the past month and exceeded the national rate of growth. Indiana has now experienced private sector employment growth in 37 of the past 40 months.

Jasper man arrested for storage unit break-ins

 

A 37-year-old Jasper man has been arrested for theft and receiving stolen property following break-ins at storage units.

Jasper Police say Ryan Estabrook was arrested Thursday morning.

He’s accused of breaking into units on the south side of the city, taking items and then trying to sell them at the Jasper Swap Shop.

Area schools earn '4 Star School' awards

Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction Glenda Ritz has announced Indiana's 4 Star schools for 2013. In order to achieve this designation, a school must be in the top 25th percentile of schools in ISTEP+ testing results. A total of 313 schools received the award throughout the state.

Warrick Co. Summer Feeding program returns in 2013

 

The Warrick County School Corporation Food & Nutrition Department will be participating in the Summer Feeding Program again this year.

Funded annually by the USDA, the program allows schools to provide free breakfast and lunch during the summer to anyone age 18 and younger at areas in the district in which the student population is at least 50% free or reduced. 

This year there will be five Summer Feeding Sites open.
